Finished and ready to ship to The Monkey! I put the finishing touches on the wallpaper and clouds this morning. This fun drawing was done with colored pencils and marker outlines, all freehand. It's the only way to draw!!

I thought this was going to be a fun surprise for The Monkey, but his Dad has already shown it to him. I hear he likes it a little. Success!!

I have to do a couple quick drawings, one promised sketchcard and a fun witch character for my Mom, so that she can have some t-shirts made for her group of ladies who meet every Wednesday to do miniatures. They are affectionately known as the Wednesday Witches. :)

Then, I have to work on Jesse to go along with Buzz here. Jesse is for The Mouse.

I hope you like Buzz. He was fun to work on and it makes me feel great that The Monkey is excited to have him.

SketchCard No.4 - The Araknid Kid (Josh Alves)

Recently, I held a contest on Twitter for achieving the 400 follower mark. I asked a trivia question regarding past work and waited for the first person to answer correctly. The prize?

The winner was able to tell me what they would like me to draw on a sketchcard (No. 4).

The lucky winner of this fabulous prize was none other than illustrator and creator of The Adventures of The Araknid Kid, Josh Alves. His request was for me to do my take on his character.

I have always loved the drawings of Spider-Man, upside down and hanging on to his webbing with one hand, so I decided to do a similar pose for The Araknid Kid. The image here is obviously black and white. I'm still wrestling with the thought of coloring it for Josh before sending it off to him. Since my job with Fox and with FatCat was all about the colors, I think I've made up my mind to go ahead and color it. Why not??

Congratulations Josh! I hope you enjoy this version and the colored version when you get it. Back down to my drawing room so I can add some colors to your fun character. I'll post the colored version when I have it finished.

Gollum - Lookie What I Got!!

I went to the mail box on Saturday and look what I found inside! My friend Kev Brett and I are doing a sketch swap and he won the prize for getting done first! My request was for Gollum. I think it turned out fantastic and it now has a place in my collection room right along side all of the other Gollum items I have.

This is a WIP for a little boy affectionately known as Monkey. If you read about the pin-up of The Monkey and The Mouse I did recently, you will know who I'm talking about. This is just my rough sketch I did over the weekend. I'm currently inking the drawing and then I'll move on to coloring it this coming weekend...fingers crossed! Hope you like it!

Sketchcard No.1 - First Ever!

Well look at that! I've done my very first sketchcard! This little guy is going to my 300th follower on Twitter! This was so fun to do! I was so nervous and did all kinds of research on lizards, dragons, positions, illustrations...and when it came down to it, I just went with a feeling and created what you see above! Sure the research helped, it always does for inspiration. But, the best stuff always comes from inside.

Wendy, thanks so much for following my craziness on Twitter. Thank you also for providing me with the opportunity to be a little creative and create my first sketchcard. How cool is that? I hope you enjoy it! Cheers!

The Marvellous Mischief and Mayhem of The Monkey and the Mouse: Episode 01

This is the cover of a new, downloadable minibook that has been put together by my new friend, Kevin Brett (on Twitter as @kev_brett). It is the first collection of his wonderfully fun and incredibly cute web comic called. The Monkey and the Mouse. Each week, Kev posts new strips that are inspired by, and feature, his 3 year old son and his little sister.

I started from the very beginning, when I found Kev's comic, and fell in love with the series right away. While enjoying Monkey's and Mouse's adventures, I have been reminded of so many things my own children have done to make me laugh as they have grown, and continue to grow. I applaud Kev for taking it upon himself to put his time and love into his comic and creating a fantastic archive of his kid's lives. What better way of doing this too...by drawing!!

In June, I noticed that Kev had posted a contest on Twitter. He asked folks to check out his web comic and post a comment about your favorite strip on the Facebook fan page. The winner was going to receive a one-of-a-kind sketchcard of the Monkey and the Mouse. Well, I never win anything (thought I), so I went on over to the site (http://tmtm.frumph.net/) and went through each and every strip. I chose the strip titled "On Three", which was one about a Slurpee brain-freeze...which I experience all the time with cold drinks! I commented on the one I liked best and wouldn't you know it...I WON! Kev sent me a terrific sketchcard, I sent him a book and animated short film I had the pleasure of working on so that he could share them with his family, and we've been chatting ever since.

Out of the blue, Kev sends me a message asking if I would like to help him out with a project. He asked if I would sketch a pin-up for a minibook he was putting together for his web comic. I couldn't believe it! I was honored, flattered, shocked, excited...and I agreed on the spot. In fact, I was so excited about working on something fun, that I finished the drawing and sent it off to Kev the very next weekend (if memory serves). Such a cool honor to be included among 5 other talented guest artists who contributed to the Monkey and the Mouse minibook! Here is the drawing I did for Kev:
Since I live in Arizona, I thought it would be fun to bring Monkey and Mouse over for a visit and surround them with all kinds of desert critters. I had lots of fun with this project.

New Pet Portrait - Jamal

Well it's about time!! A new pet portrait to add to my blog! This drawing was one I donated for a silent auction at work. This was done from the photo you see above, cropped to the portion I focused on for the drawing. I used Prismacolor pencils. The dimensions of the entire drawing are 17 x 14. Please let me know what you think. I love to receive feedback on my work, so that I continue to grow. The dog's name was Jamal. Sadly, he is no longer with his family. My friend at work wanted to have this created for his Mother. I hope she enjoys it!

Latest Commission Work In Progress

Sorry it has been so long since I have posted anything here. After being laid off from both jobs last Fall, life has been quite a challenge as many people in the world well know. I'm happy to say that I have found work and have picked up my colored pencils as well. I love doing this kind of artwork and hope I have opportunity after opportunity to do so and continue to improve and learn more skills. Please let me know what you think of my latest that is now in progress.

Inspire

I recently did some research on a disease I was diagnosed with back in 2001. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about it, just to be aware of what could happen or symptoms to be aware of, in case I ever come out of remission.

This is a pretty cool site, had a lot of information not only of my disease (Sarcoidosis) but also anything and everything folks could be experiencing or going through. There is a community of friends to learn from and bounce ideas off of, etc.

Anyway...check it out if you feel the urge.

Bob's Dragon

A few weeks ago, I was asked if I could draw a dragon that would be used to make a decal for a Camaro. One of my friends, working with me at Cisco, was going to be moving out of state soon and he wanted to see if I could get the dragon done before he left on his trip.

Here is the line drawing and the Photoshop render of the dragon. It was a HUGE file, but everything worked out fine and he had his dragon on the Camaro before he hit the road. Too bad one of his friends backed out of a driveway and scraped one whole side of his car…not 12 hours after having the decals applied.

I’m still waiting for the photo of his Camaro. Hopefully he sends me the good side and the scraped side. I’ll post those images when I get them.

I drew this when I was a sophomore in high school. I was home sick for two weeks with some sort of high school virus and had plenty of Mad Magazines to keep me company. ET was on the cover of the one I was reading and I had the urge to draw him.

Fox Animation Studios - Titan A.E.

At the start of our next feature production, Titan A.E., I was still in the Ink & Paint department as a Paint Checker. Shortly into production, however, I tested for one of the Color Stylist positions that opened in the Color Model department. I was chosen to fill one of the positions and began choosing colors and working with another great crew at Fox.

Fox Animation Studios - Anastasia & Bartok the Magnificent

This is a cel I painted while learning how to help out in the Color Model department.

Early in 1995, I found out that Fox was going to be opening an animation studio in Phoenix. I gathered all the artwork I had, put together a portfolio, and shipped it off for review.

Two rejection letters, one life drawing class, and prepartion for teaching in my own classroom at the Phoenix Day School for the Deaf later, I received a phone call from someone at the studio. They were actually informing me that they had a position in Ink & Paint and asking if I was interested in taking the position! Hmmm, let me think about that…YES!

It was the middle of June and I wouldn’t be starting until September, so I finished my life drawing class and waited anxiously. I couldn’t believe it.

September finally arrived, I started working in Ink & Paint, and I was having the best time of my life. Not only was I learning everything I could about Ink & Paint, using Soft Image Toonz, I was asked to help out up in the Color Model department and learned how to paint cels, and I was asked to help out at the live-action shoots as one of the extra live-action reference actors.

In Ink & Paint, I probably touched just about every scene in the movie Anastasia. I painted and also did something we phrased as “manillation” (adding a manilla folder color to rough animation in order for the characters to read better over layout drawings). Later in production, I tested and became a Paint Checker for my department. I worked as both Painter and Paint Checker on Anastasia and then Bartok the Magnificent.

Comic Book Store Mural (1990-91)

Here is my first commission ever! I started collecting comics when I was in college and offered to design and paint a mural for the shop where I bought my books. Some of the images are in progress, some are of the finished work. The whole mural was done on four sheets of plywood, with acrylic paints. All characters and lettering was drawn freehand.

I think I have the original layout on a roll of paper somewhere around my house.

I went back to that store about 10 or so years ago and discovered that it was no longer hanging above the comics. I asked about it and was taken to the back room where the sections were lined up against a back wall and were being used for paintball target practice. Thankfully, they had the decency to use the backs of the panels and the artwork was still “ok”.

I was assigned as an Instructional Designer for several courses developed for the World Health Organization through Cisco and the Cisco Learning Institute. Above are several image from the various courses that were produced by the media team from my designs/storyboards. I was asked to take raw content received from the client and organize it into units, lessons, activities and assessments.
